Shopify apps enable stores of all sizes to navigate various lifecycle stages.
If your DTC brand is driving less than $1M per year, you’re probably hitting a very familiar wall.
You’ve opened your Shopify store.
You’ve installed Klaviyo [or Omnisend…depending on your particular leaning], JudgeMe and TinySEO. These tools are tablestakes. Probably week 1.
You’re driving paid ads traffic from search, shopping and social ads. Conversions are happening. Retargeting lists are building. It feels like up and to the right is easy.
Then, you hit a ceiling when it comes to driving store growth, conversion rates and customer lifetime value. Spending more on ads is great, but not always realistic [or linear in performance].
So what apps in the Shopify ecosystem should you be leveraging after getting the basics in place? We’ve pulled together what we call phase 2 apps every merchant should consider. But first…
What makes me qualified to recommend Shopify Apps?

If you’re a skeptic, welcome to the club.
There are thousands of articles, videos, partners and more highlighting a vast ecosystem of Shopify Apps that all, somehow, seem to get 5 star ratings. I’ve seen a lot in my career to know what drives growth and what doesn’t. Am I the most qualified…probably not. But I think I’ve gain some valuable perspective.
First, I spent the first 8 years of my career in performance-centric, data-driven ecommerce marketing at a world-renowned, elite ecommerce marketing agency, supporting merchants and brands from $1M to $300M per year. Then, I spent 4 years running affiliate, influencer, partnership and digital marketing campaigns for a top-rated personal health app. Finally, I’ve spent the last 4 years working with ecommerce brands to support customer growth with their affiliate and influencer marketing efforts.
I’ve been around a lot of brands, of all sizes and stages, for a long time. I don’t know everything. But I’ve seen, used, and heard about a lot.
1. UpOrder – turn your Shopify transactional emails into revenue engines

You’ve made your site beautiful. The checkout….c’est magnifique! The thank you page…witty and playful. The order confirmation email. A complete afterthought.
But one of the best places to drive additional revenue from a customer is right after they purchase. The emotions are high. The excitement is palpable. They are opening a confirmation for the exact thing they just did. Don’t miss the opportunity. UpOrder is post purchase email customization at its easiest.
If you are reading this, there is a good chance you are thinking exactly this right now: “I didn’t know I could customize my Shopify transactional emails.” That’s because you can’t. Not without UpOrder. UpOrder allows you to brand those emails to drive a seamless user experience, plus you can feature products, offers, invite users to join your Refersion-powered affiliate program, and more. The best part? The subscription is based on order volume. No orders…no fees. Lots of orders, lower fees.
Role in the Stack: Monetizing transactional communications.
Why It Matters: Transactional emails (order confirmations, shipping updates) average 60–70% open rates. Can any of your other emails say that? I didn’t think so.
How Merchants Use UpOrder: UpOrder is the easiest way to convert default, plain text Shopify notification receipts into branded marketing assets featuring dynamic product recommendations, referral prompts, and time-sensitive discount codes.
2. Refersion – grow your business with word-of-mouth and affiliate sales

Your best promoter is your most recent customer.
Think about the last family get together or friends-giving you attended. Your discussing with the host the dutch oven she used to to make the gumbo that knocked your socks off. She tells you the brand. The size. The color she picked. The color she almost picked. You immediately whip out your phone. Click. Add to Cart….
Customer referral and affiliate marketing are tremendous ways to reach new users without paying high ad CPCs. The key is an affiliate tool that integrates with your existing stack (Shopify, Klaviyo, Yotpo, CreatorCommerce, etc.). That’s where Refersion makes affiliate tracking easy.
Leverage your customer base. Use the AI-powered affiliate discovery for cold outreach. Capture users post purchase. Affiliate marketing enables both brand and performance reach. Track them all. And pay them all.
Role in the Stack: Driving scalable, performance-based acquisition.
Why It Matters: Paid ad costs continue to rise. Scaling to $10M requires diversified, predictable traffic channels that don’t eat away at profit margins.
How Merchants Use It: Builds and automates affiliate, influencer, and ambassador networks with custom tracking, first-party data attribution, and streamlined commission payouts.
Bonus: Works directly with UpOrder by placing affiliate and ambassador invite prompts right on transactional order confirmation receipts.
3. CreatorCommerce – improve on page conversion rates from your influencer and affiliate marketing

Driving traffic from influencers and affiliates is a lot of work, especially when you compare it with paid ads (add keywords, set bids, go live). You’ve got affiliate recruitment, negotiating commissions, approving content, going live, tracking sales, issuing payments, monitoring for returns, etc. That’s a lot of work to simply ignore the post click experience.
Here’s a word for you when it comes to ignoring the landing page experience of your affiliate and influencer driven visitors: don’t!
CreatorCommerce makes it easy to launch personalized and on-brand affiliate landing pages, highlighting their specific content, relevant products, and offers, hosted directly on your shopify store. These pages are built automatically and can increase conversion rates more than 50% on the traffic you are already driving.
Role in the Stack: Maximizing site conversion rates.
Why It Matters: Paid and affiliate traffic is wasted if site visitors leave without converting.
How Merchants Use It: Create personalized landing pages for you affiliate marketing and influencer marketing efforts to drastically increase conversion rate.
Bonus: Integrates directly with Refersion to automatically generate unpublished creator-specific Shopify landing pages using your affiliate lists.
Double Bonus: Refersion customers can get 3 free landing pages for any affiliates or influencers of their choosing. Just connect with our team to get started.
4. Gorgias – customer support can and should be a channel

One thing brands lose when operating exclusively online is how customers may benefit from asking about the product, getting their hands on it, understanding how other people use it, highlighting things that go well.
Gorgias becomes that personal shopper your store is missing. A truly valuable personal shopper takes in what the customer is trying to achieve and points them in the right direction. They unblock their concerns and drive them over the finish line, feeling confident about their purchase.
But the role of a personal shopper doesn’t stop at the purchase.
When customers are getting antsy about receiving their order, you want to bring them peace of mind. Give them regular updates. Point them to valuable resources. Enable order edits. Issue refunds. All without having to overload your bottom line with support staff. Gorgias powers all of this with automation and AI at the core.
Role in the Stack: Turning Customer Support into a Revenue & Retention Engine.
Why It Matters: As you store scales, support ticket volume increase exponentially. Slow response times strain customer trust and hurt LTV.
How Merchants Use It:
Automates Routine Queries: Uses AI and macro templates to instantly handle “Where is my order?” (WISMO) requests, freeing up agents to focus on high-value interactions.
Pre-Purchase Conversion: Deploys live chat on high-intent product pages to answer shopper questions in real time, directly pushing hesitant buyers over the finish line.
In-Inbox Actions: Allows support reps to view full Shopify order histories, edit orders, issue refunds, or generate discount codes directly within the ticket without switching tabs.
Bonus: Gorgias integrates with Refersion to easily identify when an inquiry is coming from a VIP affiliate/ambassador, allowing reps to prioritize high-value partner tickets or verify affiliate order details on the fly.
5. Recharge – turn one-off purchases into active subscriptions

First, this isn’t going to be for every DTC merchant. Not all Shopify apps are for everyone. Think about it…there aren’t many folks that need to buy new housewares or mattresses on a monthly or quarterly basis.
But, many DTC merchants underestimate how they can reframe their product catalog to enable regular refills of the core or related products.
When a customer runs out or wears through unexpectedtly, they will turn to Amazon to replace with an alternative. The work you’ve done as a brand is nullified for a knockoff replacement.
Incorporating a subscription component to your business can eliminate the pain caused by suddenly running through your supply of coffee, soap, or plain-shirts. Instead, it becomes a opportunity to maintain customer loyalty on the purchase side of things. Recharge makes it easy for shopify merchants to incorporate a subscription component to their business, including the operational components to maintain those customers like a portal to manage your subscription.
Role in the Stack: Building Predictable MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue) & Maximizing LTV.
Why It Matters: Reaching $10M purely on one-off sales requires a massive, continuous ad budget. Subscriptions stabilize cash flow, drastically reduce customer acquisition cost (CAC) dependency, and raise the LTV ceiling for consumable, replenishable, or membership-based brands.
How Merchants Use It:
Subscribe & Save Offerings: Enables flexible recurring billing models (e.g., delivery every 30, 60, or 90 days with a percentage discount).
Customer Retention Portals: Gives buyers control to easily swap products, skip a shipment, or pause subscriptions—drastically lowering subscriber churn.
Churn Intervention: Triggers automated win-back flows, exit surveys, and dynamic incentives when a customer attempts to cancel.
Bonus: Recharge works hand-in-hand with Refersion to offer recurring affiliate commissions for subscription sign-ups (incentivizing affiliates to drive high-LTV subscribers)
Double Bonus: Recharge pairs with UpOrder to send optimized, high-converting recurring order preview and confirmation emails.
How I assembled this list
This list could be 50 tools long. But that feels like an insurmountable hurdle. So the objective was to take the following criteria and identify tools outside of the obvious to drive up revenue for your dtc brand.
- Be truly useful…No shelfware. Every single one of these Shopify apps is meant to be truly useful without having to be babysat every day. But the flexibility and functionality exists to adjust, monitor, tweak, and iterate.
- Shopify rating 4.6 at a minimum. Merchants like you need to sing their praises. That is critical to avoiding the noise.
- Customer support you’ll love. Each of these solutions have support teams dedicated to making your day. They want to support merchants in their goals.
- Affordable Pricing. Value-based pricing. Consumption-based pricing. Flat fees. The options abound. My goal here was to ensure the Shopify apps can be brought on by SMB-sized, DTC brands without overly taxing the business.
These were my criteria based on my experience and from what I hear from merchants. Shopify’s app ecosystems has thousands of options. Maybe this will cut through some of the noise.
Conclusion
The Shopify apps focus on areas of driving new, profitable growth without requiring massive ads investments.
Don’t be discouraged by a stagnant email list, flat revenue, or rising CPAs. The tools abound to help drive profitable growth, increase on-page conversion rates, and increase customer lifetime value. The tools to aid you in your goal of growing your business are here. You’ve just got to put in a little time.
